Search engines don’t just show links anymore
Something big changed in how people find businesses online. Instead of typing keywords into Google and clicking blue links, millions of people now ask AI a question and get a direct answer.
“Who’s the best dentist in Austin?” “What does foundation repair cost?” “Compare CRM software for small businesses.”
These questions go to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, and other AI tools. And the AI gives a direct answer — often recommending specific businesses by name.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your business visible to these AI answer engines. If SEO is about ranking on Google’s results page, AEO is about being the answer when AI responds to a question.
Why AEO matters right now
The numbers are moving fast:
- 27% of searches now go through AI-powered tools (up from 5% in 2024)
- AI referral traffic to websites grew 527% year-over-year
- 58% of GenZ and Millennials prefer asking AI over searching Google
- Google’s own AI Overview appears on 40%+ of search queries
- 93% of AI Mode searches result in zero clicks — the AI answers directly
This means even if you rank #1 on Google, AI might answer the question before anyone sees your listing. And if AI doesn’t mention your business in that answer, you’re invisible to a growing chunk of your potential customers.
How AEO differs from traditional SEO
SEO optimizes for Google’s ranking algorithm. You target keywords, build backlinks, improve site speed, and try to reach position 1.
AEO optimizes for AI comprehension. You structure your content so AI systems can understand, extract, and cite your information when answering questions.
Here’s the key difference:
| Factor | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank higher in search results | Be cited in AI answers |
| Format | Keywords in headings and text | Clear Q&A format, structured data |
| Authority | Backlinks and domain authority | Citations, reviews, consistent NAP |
| Content style | Keyword-optimized long-form | Direct answers in first 2 sentences |
| Technical | Site speed, mobile-friendly | Schema markup, llms.txt, clear structure |
The good news: most AEO work also helps your SEO. They’re not competing strategies — they’re complementary.
How AI answer engines find information
Each AI tool works slightly differently, but they all look for similar signals:
ChatGPT uses its training data plus real-time web browsing. It favors:
- Well-structured content with clear answers
- Consistent business information across the web
- Strong review presence on Google, Yelp, and industry sites
- Websites with schema markup (JSON-LD structured data)
Perplexity searches the web in real-time for every query. It favors:
- Content that directly answers the question asked
- Pages with clear headings, lists, and data
- Authoritative sources with good domain reputation
- Recent, up-to-date content
Google AI Overview pulls from Google’s own index. It favors:
- Pages already ranking in the top 10 for the query
- Content with FAQ schema and clear answer formatting
- Reviews and ratings from Google Business Profile
- Pages with high engagement metrics
Seven steps to optimize for AI answer engines
1. Answer questions directly at the top of your content
Don’t bury the answer. If someone asks “how much does a new roof cost?” — put the answer in your first paragraph. AI systems extract the clearest, most direct answer they can find.
2. Add structured data to every page
Use JSON-LD schema markup: LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Service, Product, Review. This gives AI systems structured information they can easily parse.
3. Create an llms.txt file
This is a new standard — a text file at your domain root that tells AI crawlers what your business does, what services you offer, and where to find key information. Think of it as robots.txt but for AI.
4. Build your review presence
AI systems heavily weight reviews. Get consistent reviews on Google, Yelp, and industry-specific platforms. Respond to every review — AI notices engagement patterns.
5. Ensure NAP consistency everywhere
Your Name, Address, and Phone number must be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, social media, and directories. Inconsistencies confuse AI systems.
6. Write content in Q&A format
Structure articles around questions your customers actually ask. Use the question as an H2, then answer it clearly in 2-3 sentences before expanding.
7. Keep information current
AI systems prefer fresh data. Update your key pages quarterly. Add current year references. Remove outdated pricing or statistics.
What happens if you ignore AEO
Right now, your competitors are probably ignoring it too. That’s your window.
Within 12-18 months, AEO will be as standard as having a mobile-friendly website. The businesses that optimize now will lock in their position as the AI-recommended choice — and it’s much harder to displace an established recommendation than to earn one from scratch.
Think about how Google worked in 2010. The businesses that invested in SEO early dominated for a decade. AEO is that same opportunity, right now.
