A systematic approach to Answer Engine Optimization
Most AEO advice is vague — “write helpful content” and “build authority.” That’s true but not actionable. You need a concrete checklist you can work through page by page, checking off items that directly influence whether AI answer engines cite your business.
This 28-point AEO checklist covers every optimization that matters in 2026. Work through it systematically, and you’ll cover more ground than 95% of businesses trying to show up in AI search results.
Content structure (Points 1-8)
1. Question-first headings Every key section should start with a question your audience actually asks. AI models match user prompts to content structured as Q&A.
2. Direct answer in the first 2 sentences After each question heading, provide a clear, concise answer immediately. Don’t bury the answer below three paragraphs of context.
3. Supporting detail follows the answer After the direct answer, add depth — statistics, examples, comparisons. This gives AI confidence that your answer is thorough and credible.
4. One topic per page Don’t cram five subjects onto one page. AEO rewards topical focus. Each page should thoroughly address a single topic or question cluster.
5. Word count between 800-2,000 words Pages under 500 words rarely get cited by AI. Pages over 3,000 words dilute topical focus. The sweet spot for AEO is comprehensive but focused.
6. Bullet points and numbered lists AI models extract list-formatted content more reliably than dense paragraphs. Use lists for steps, features, comparisons, and recommendations.
7. Comparison and “vs” content Create pages that directly compare options. “X vs Y” content matches a huge volume of AI prompts and gives models easy-to-extract recommendations.
8. Include specific numbers and data AI models favor content with concrete figures — prices, percentages, timeframes. Vague claims like “significant improvement” get skipped.
Schema markup (Points 9-14)
9. FAQPage schema on question-based content Add FAQPage structured data to any page that answers multiple questions. This is the single highest-impact AEO schema type.
10. Organization schema on your homepage Tell AI who you are with Organization schema — name, logo, founding date, service areas, social profiles.
11. LocalBusiness schema (if applicable) For businesses serving geographic areas, LocalBusiness schema helps AI answer “best X near me” prompts.
12. Article schema on blog posts Every blog post should have Article schema with author, publish date, and description. This helps AI assess content freshness and authority.
13. HowTo schema on tutorial content Step-by-step guides should use HowTo schema so AI can extract and present your instructions directly.
14. Product/Service schema on offering pages Describe your products or services with structured data — pricing, features, availability. AI uses this for recommendation queries.
Authority signals (Points 15-20)
15. Author pages with credentials Create dedicated author pages showing expertise, credentials, and publication history. AI models evaluate author authority for AEO scoring.
16. Cited sources in your content Link to authoritative sources — studies, official documentation, industry reports. Content that cites sources gets treated as more reliable.
17. Consistent brand mentions across the web Your brand name, description, and positioning should be consistent across your website, social profiles, directories, and third-party mentions.
18. Third-party reviews and testimonials Reviews on Google, Clutch, G2, Trustpilot, and industry directories feed into the trust signals AI models use to recommend businesses.
19. Backlinks from topically relevant sites Quality backlinks still matter for AEO. AI training data includes link graphs, and models use link authority as a credibility signal.
20. Press mentions and media coverage Coverage from recognized publications gives AI models strong confidence signals when deciding which brands to cite.
Technical AEO (Points 21-25)
21. llms.txt file in your root directory
Create a /llms.txt file that describes your business, services, and key content for AI crawlers. This is the robots.txt of AEO.
22. Fast page load speed Pages that load slowly get crawled less frequently. AI training pipelines and retrieval systems penalize slow sites.
23. Clean, crawlable HTML Avoid heavy JavaScript rendering for critical content. AI crawlers need to access your content without executing complex scripts.
24. XML sitemap with lastmod dates Keep your sitemap updated with accurate modification dates. This helps AI systems prioritize fresh content.
25. Mobile-responsive design AI retrieval systems often fetch and evaluate mobile versions of pages. Non-responsive sites lose indexing opportunities.
Ongoing maintenance (Points 26-28)
26. Update content every 60 days AI models deprioritize stale content. Review and refresh your key pages at least every 60 days with current data and examples.
27. Monitor AI mentions monthly Track how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview mention your brand. Use AEO monitoring tools or manual prompt testing.
28. Audit competitor AI visibility quarterly Check which brands AI recommends in your space. Identify gaps in their AEO strategy that you can exploit.
How to use this checklist
Don’t try to check all 28 points in a week. Prioritize based on impact:
- Week 1-2: Content structure (points 1-8) — highest immediate impact on AEO
- Week 3-4: Schema markup (points 9-14) — technical but high-leverage
- Month 2: Authority signals (points 15-20) — longer timeline but compounding returns
- Ongoing: Technical AEO and maintenance (points 21-28) — set up systems and stick to them
At WeLead Lab, we’ve scored hundreds of sites against this checklist. Most businesses score below 10/28 on their first audit. Getting to 20+ puts you ahead of nearly every competitor in most industries.
